v Mary Maxim Starlette Yarn 1(sizes newborn/ 9mos)-2 (for sizes 12/18mos& 18/24mos) skeins 3 ½ oz/ 100 g/ 180 yds – White or your choice of colors This is my Main color for the Bodice & Bloomers

v Bernat Baby Sport Yarn 1-2 skeins 12.30 oz / 350 g/1256 yd / 1148 m – Sherbet or your choice of colors. This is my contrast color but can be the Main color if you prefer to work a solid color dress.

v 2 – “0” or “1” sized snaps not sure exactly as mine were no longer on their original card & I tried to measure them against the only sizing card that I had held onto & they seem to fit both diagrams; we may need more I’m not sure how effective these will be since I’ve not tested this out. You can place up to 4 snaps across the crotch to seal shut. Or you may convert them to pretty bloomers for those that are potty-trained.

v 3 – 9/16” buttons any color if you are going to cover & make them into the crochet button, or colors to match outfit

v (optional items)1 ½ yds grosgrain ribbon in color of your choice if you want to substitute for the I-cord & 2 – detachable stich markers

v 1 pair double pointed #3 knitting needles for creating the I-cord

Crochet Stitches & abbreviations that will be used:

v Ch– Chain SC– single crochet HDC– Half-Double crochets DC– Double crochets

v Beg SC– Beginning Single crochet(loop on hook starts the sc, in rows make sure you turn your work 1st, in rounds make sure you’ve sl st before, inserting your hook into the same space, yo, draw up loop, yo, draw through both loops). Beg HDC – Beginning Half Double Crochet – (starts the row or round the same as a Beg Sc but on your next stitch you work a normal HDC. Beg DC – Beginning Double crochet(start with a beg sc + ch 1) I prefer these over the simple chains as these make for smoother edges & are easier to work with then attempting to count ch stitches for my eyes anymore.

v Foundational Sc Foundational HDC Foundational DC – These are used as directed since I have a problem now days with keeping long chains from twisting. I use them as my bases. I will provide special instructions within the pattern on the 1st & any other specially handled stitch such as a joining.

v FPDC – Front Post Double crochet (YO, Insert hook away from yourself, around the stitch, then back towards yourself, Yo, draw up loop , yo, draw through 2 loops, yo, draw through remaining loops)

v BPDC – back Post Double crochet (Yo, Insert hook towards you from the back of work, then away from yourself, yo, draw up loop, yo, draw through 2 loops, yo, draw through remaining loops)

v Sl st – slip stitch YO – Yarn over SK – skip Sp – Space

v FLO – Front loop only (the loop of previous row/round closest to yourself)

v BLO – Back loop only (the loop of the previous row/round farthest from you towards the back of your work)

v FPSC – Front post Single crochet(Insert hook away from you around the stitch instructed, draw up loop, yo, draw through both loops)

v FPT – Front post Treble crochet(YO twice, insert hook away from yourself around stitch instructed, then back towards yourself, yo draw through 2 loops, yo draw through 2 loops, yo, draw through last loops)

v SC2Tog or (Begsc2tog this stitch will be described with 1st appearance) – Single crochet 2 together – decrease made

v SC3Tog or (begsc3tog this stitch will be described with 1st appearance) – Single crochet 3 together – decrease made

v Inc– Increase by 1 stitch each end or as directed Dec – Decrease by 1 stitch or as directed.

v DC2Tog- Double crochet 2 together – Decrease made

v Semi-shell Pattern#1 – (DC, Ch2, 4 DC; all in the same space indicated)Beginning Semi-shell Pattern#1(Beg dc, ch 2, 4 DC; at beginning of rounds)

v Semi-shell Pattern#2 – (4 DC, ch2, dc; all in the same space indicated)Beginning Semi-shell Pattern#2 (begdc+3dc, ch 2, dc; at beginning or rounds)

Knit Stitches & abbreviations

v Double CO – Double Cast On – This is a very easy co on method it helps beginner knitters maintain a more even pattern of stitches until they are accustomed to gauging yarn.

v K– knit

v BO– Bind Off

Crocheted Buttons (Optional- dress is designed to fit either direction) I’ve opted this time to have my buttons show. Please see Dress pattern below for more details.

v Ch 4, add 7 more DC into the 4th ch from hook, sl st to join

v BLO, Dec 1 stitch evenly around; Dc2tog 4 times; before sealing shut add button to hold shape, sl st to seal, Fasten off leave enough of a tail for sewing into place later on the bodice.

I-Cord

Knit version: Double CO 3, do not turn needle keep the yarn to the left of your work, slip stitches to other end to work. K across these stitches, switching only the empty needle to repeat until your cord is 48” in length. BO all stitches. Hide tail within the tube/cord. I preferred the slenderness of this cord.

Crochet version: with smallest hook available – Ch 3, sl st together. Sc in each ch around, sl st to join, being careful pull stitches upward to form a tiny tube, continue to sc around these 3 stitches until your cord measures 48” in length. This cord is just slightly thicker but just as effective. SC3tog & fasten off, hide tail within the tube/cord.

Darling little slip-ons (Make 2)

v Ch 4, Sl st to form ring.

Our dress is now complete. As I stated this is a versatile design it may be worn either direction, if you opt to have your buttons on the back I will recommend that you do no cover them on the Infant dress as when they roll over the buttons may possibly misalign their fragile backs. Then you may want to decorate the panel between the shoulders to reflect that it is now the front of your dress. I suggest that you try different positions for your waistband bow as well for more versatility.

Frilly Bloomers/Diaper Cover: This is my 1st attempt to creating, so I’ve not tried this pattern out until my little grandniece receives it for Christmas. They may require more snaps to hold the crotch shut while where a diaper & crawling about. And if they are just bloomers I do suggest that you not use the snap fasteners but actually sl st both the front & back crotch sections together & trim the leg openings with a frilly trim, if they happen to be potty trained & wearing Big Girl trainers or patties, as we did for the sleeves of the Dress & the ruffle on the back of these & around the bodice.
